Self Evaluation

Before coming to college I thought all English classes were taught the same way; you write descriptive essays, learn about grammar, and, last but not least, read. It wasn’t until I took English 15s that I realized that although English classes do contain the same basics, it is the way that you teach it that really makes a difference.   I have learned a lot in this course, not only through the in-class assignments and lectures, but also because of the outside activities. Some of the activities consisted of going to the Palmer Museum, the Arboretum, and the Playhouse Theater. The professor of this course really emphasizes the importance of art which is something I have never really had awareness of until attending the outside activities. Although I have been to museums and plays before, the Palmer Museum, the Arboretum, and “In the Red and Brown Water” play have really expanded my mind of the different types of arts; because we had to write blogs of our experience in these places, they have also contributed to the progress of my descriptive writing. I have learned through these events to really notice the little things and the surroundings of the objects, images, plants, or even the moment, and see how it all has an effect on the overall message.
This course really helped me improve my writing, by expanding my visual mind, and by also teaching me three words: Logos, Ethos, and Pathos. By applying the three pillars correctly in my writing, I know that the audience my essays (or any pieces of writing) are reaching out to, will get the message. Logos is very important because no one is really satisfied with just an opinion. Everyone wants reasoning behind it, and that’s exactly what Logos those, it supplies logic. Ethos is what really gains the reader’s trust; without it, you risk losing people’s confidence. Ethos is what shows credibility, it tells your audience that your source is reliable. Pathos is the most famous of them all; it is the one that is used the most in things like advertisement and public speaking, because it basically deals with personally connecting with the reader. This is where you appeal to a person’s emotions. Before this course, I was never aware of the three pillars; I didn’t notice how much of a difference it can make in one’s paper.
As a freshman, this course has really eased my transition of going from a high school student to a college student. The types of education are completely different, people tend to perceive college as more difficult, and although, for the most part, this is true, English15s made me see it in a positive, challenging way. Although I did more work than I did in high school, it was work I enjoyed doing, and the skills I gained from it, I was able to use outside of the classroom. Everything that I was taught in this course, and the way it was taught contributed in actually making this a learning experience, it wasn’t just one of those classes that you forget everything once the course is over.
